Frauenmuseum Hittisau

The Women’s Museum in Hittisau is the first museum – and the only one of its kind in Austria – to be devoted solely to women. In its rural context it is also unique throughout the world. It presents temporary exhibits involving topic areas such as women’s history and the cultural advances made by women. These themes are approached and documented with both regional and supra-regional contexts and points of view in mind. Inclusive and participative formats are considered important points of departure to guarantee the most appealing and broadest variety of exhibitions and projects. In addition, the museum offers immersion events and educational workshops for schools, together with lectures, readings and concerts.

Considerable emphasis is placed on the personal exchange and dissemination of information and ideas. About twenty women from the region – of different ages and very differing professional and personal backgrounds – regularly meet and discuss the proposed exhibition topics, with the goal of directly communicating concrete ideas, concepts and program content to the public.
